Acupuncture in Bowie, MD

Acupuncture is a traditional healing therapy, which originated in China more than 2,000 years ago.  The term acupuncture involves stimulation of anatomical points on the body by a variety of techniques. The most commonly applied method involves penetrating the skin with very slender, sterile needles.  The needles activate the body’s Qi and support natural healing by enhancing restorative power, immunity and physical and emotional health.

Acupuncture is a safe, natural and drug-free therapy from which children and adults may benefit.

What Is QI?

Qi (pronounced “chee”) is the life force or energy that flows throughout the body.  Qi fuels the body and protects us from illness, pain and disease.

Qi flows through pathways in the body called meridians. Each of the 14 main meridians corresponds to specific organs and glands. Meridians are like rivers that flow within the body and transport nourishing Qi to every cell, organ, gland tissue and muscle. The flow of Qi may become blocked like a river obstructed by a dam. Blockage of Qi can cause imbalance or damage to a person’s health.

Physical and emotional trauma, stress, lack of exercise, overexertion, seasonal changes, poor diet, accidents, addiction or excessive activity are among the many things that can influence the quality, quantity and balance of Qi.

How does acupuncture work?
Modern science has learned the following about the effects of acupuncture on the body:

  • It strengthens the immune system by increasing T-cell counts. This may be why it works on allergies and chronic fatigue syndrome.
  • It releases pain-killing endorphins which also play a big role in the functioning of the hormonal system. This is why acupuncture works well for back pain, arthritis, ulcers and also for P.M.S.  Endorphins, released through acupuncture, not only relax the whole body when released, but they also regulate serotonin in the brain which plays a big part in our moods. This is why depression is often treated with acupuncture.
  • It breaks the spasm cycle which muscles can get "caught" in, causing unrelenting tightness and pain. It does this by increasing circulation which in turn provides needed nutrients to nerves and muscles to begin healing.
  • Acupuncture works with our "life force" which is similar to our electrical circuitry that runs throughout our body. It taps into specific points along this circuitry and balances the energy connecting all of our major organs.
  • Acupuncture works without drugs or chemicals, has no known side effects and is perfectly safe and comfortable for adults and children.

What are the benefits of acupuncture?

Acupuncture is effective for many concerns of the body, mind and spirit.  With ongoing treatment, people have reported:

  • A boost in their immune system, quicker recovery and decrease tendency to get sick.
  • Improved stamina and vitality.
  • A greater sense of ease in their body and more harmonious relationships with others.
  • More awareness and improved management of their own health (potential reduction in cost for long-term health care, prescription medicine and visits to the physician.)

Do the needles hurt?

The sterile, nontoxic, single-use needles are slightly thicker than a human hair and bear no resemblance to syringes. The sensation felt when the needles are inserted beneath the skin’s surface varies from person to person. Some people feel a little pinch but most people feel no pain at all.

What should I expect during treatment?

During your first visit, Belynda White will speak with you at length about your symptoms, health history and life-style.  She will also physically examine you. This appointment takes about 90 minutes and is necessary to accurately determine where Qi is blocked and to develop a treatment plan.

How do I prepare for my visits?

Prepare a list of any questions that you may have. Wear loose, comfortable clothing so that acupuncture points may be easily accessed.  Refrain from using scented soaps, lotions, oils and shampoo or wearing perfume or cologne on the day of your appointment.  Remove make-up and foundation prior to your appointment. Do not eat large meals just before or after your visit. However, do not fast or skip meals on the day of your visit. Refrain from overexertion, working out, drugs or alcohol for up to six hours before and 24 hours after treatment. Make time to relax, get plenty of rest and avoid stressful situations. Take notes of physical or emotional changes between visits.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments varies from person to person. Initially, treatment is weekly four to six weeks. Your body chemistry, your particular problem, and the length of time that you have been ill all play a part in the number and length of treatments necessary. However, the goal of Five Element Acupuncture is to get each person to a place where they ideally only require seasonal maintenance.
